The Last Harvest — الحصاد الأخير

Hand-blown glass vessel holding a seed-shaped vial of olive oil, set in burnt olive wood on a stone plinth

Preserving olive oil from Gaza
to save a threatened culture

A story rooted in Palestine

For us, as for so many Palestinian
Fallaheen, the year revolves around
the olive harvest. It is when families
gather, and generations of tradition
carry on. In recent years, the harvest
brings a worry: Will we reach our
trees? Will they still be there?

That concern gave this initiative its
name: The Last Harvest. It speaks
to a possibility we never want to
accept, but can no longer ignore.

الزيتون Hands sorting freshly picked olives

So, together with The Big Heart Foundation and
the Arab Group for the Protection of Nature (APN),
we acted. We secured something precious: a small
quantity of oil from Deir Al Balah, Gaza. Confiscated
at first, it finally left after an uncertain journey.

We preserved it in a one-of-a-kind piece,
created by Palestinian artisans, now to be
auctioned so that farmers can replant.

Bid to preserve the irreplaceable

This oil was never meant to be consumed, but preserved.
Designed by Palestinian glass artist Lameice Abu Aker
and hand-blown by her artisans in the village of Jaba',
West Bank.

The vessel takes the shape of the olive oil dispensers that have
always sat on Palestinian tables. Seed-shaped glass holds the
precious oil, resting on a base of burnt olive wood,
a reminder that the groves can grow again.

It holds Gaza’s heritage and through this auction,
100% of proceeds goes to replanting Gaza’s olive trees.

Guardians of the groves

Everything we do is for the Fallaheen, the
farmers. They are the reason the groves are still
standing, and the reason they can grow again.
Our work is to stand behind them, so they can
keep doing what their families have always done.
